Our Team

  • Kendra Nelson, President

Kendra Nelson, currently a Health and Physical Education teacher within the NYC Department of Education. Kendra discovered the love of sports at the age of 6 through gymnastics then propelled into organized basketball at the age of 12. The introduction began at JHS 324 to Barney Davis who then became, Coach/Mentor of a lifetime. While learning to play and becoming successful at playing basketball in the late 1980’s, our team took a visit to Goldwater Hospital (specializes in caring for paralyzed patients) where we were perplexed to see the joy we brought to the faces of the patients. Upon meeting several patients one stood out and inspired the transition of our team's name to M.I.K.A (Making Intelligent Kids Athletes). The young lady became an honorary member of our team, driving purpose and perseverance in our efforts as we played. Transitioning from a player to a Coach of over 20 years, this program continues to impact young girls, fueling them with the same purpose and perseverance on and off the court. As a player, I’ve acquired several accolades: NYC Player of the Year 2 consecutive seasons in a row, made the NYC All-City team 4x’s, won the NYC PSAL Championship in 1991, broke the NYC scoring record in 1992 with 2,500 points, and earned a basketball scholarship to play at Seton Hall University-DIV. I, graduated with a BA in Liberal Art and Masters of Science in Secondary Physical Education.
